Food! To Yuppie or Not to Yuppie?

Time is flyyyyyying...

This kid is 8 months old now. He is getting more curious, and more able to explore the things he's curious about, which means, I have to really watch him. But, this is about food, not how my son is becoming a mini-godzilla to his toys and other important breakable things.

We came to that 5 month mark, and we had to start weening him away from the bottle. The Doc gave us some parameters, and we went for it. Here's a step by step, on a larger scale, so you can get an idea of the progression you'll go through, and the decisions to make.

First... teaching them to eat. You don't need any new food yet. You mix rice cereal with formula or breast milk. At first, you make it more runny, and as they get better and keeping it in their mouth, and swallowing it, you can make it thicker. I actually think this has a reverse effect a little... it was a huge mess at first, because it's basically a liquid; after it's thicker, they just bite and swallow, no big deal... you'll see. 2 times per day try the rice cereal, and give them the rest of their bottle as usual. Make sure you talk to your Doc, but most of you will start off with the rice cereal stuff. Then, you have another decision to make.

How Yuppie Are You? Now, you need to decide whether you want to buy baby food, or make it. There's different brands you can buy, and different price points for each. We decided to do a combo. We're not yuppies. :) but we found it to be more cost effective if you make it yourself. If you are a yuppie, and you want to make your own baby food because of pesticides and preservatives, and you want to have total control of what your kid is eating, then by all means, yuppie-it-up. It doesn't matter why, but you need to decide. Whether your buying or making, going organic is definitely more costly.

Sidenote--BABY BULLET: We bought the baby bullet. Don't be fooled, it's a blender, but iit IS nice. It came with 2 blenders, a bigger one with 2 blades (for meat), and a smaller one with 4 blades. Careful, it's like buying an apple product; you get sucked into all the other things you can buy, but it all looks good and works together. If you're OCD about stuff, this is the thing for you... all the 'bullet' containers allow you to mark the date you made the food, there's a freezer container, to-go container, stirrers, etc. They have a Baby Bullet that steams the food for you, this is much more expensive, up to you. http://www.amazon.com/Baby-Bullet-Complete-Care-System/dp/B004V5BTUA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387389120&sr=8-1&keywords=baby+bullet

Making Baby Food. For me, I don't mind putting in some sweat equity (it doesn't actually take any sweat btw), than reaching in my wallet to pay for convenience. But I think that it's cheaper anyway, even if you don't factor in the time it takes to make. Veggies are easy... You just need to buy low-sodium or no-salt added frozen vegetables. Steam 'em (usually in the bag) or boil, blend 'em. Store 'em. Done. Fruit you have to peel, cut, boil, blend, store--just a couple extra steps. There is nothing special about baby food, it is literally the same food you and I eat, just blended so they don't choke on it. Don't over think it.

What to eat first. You'll find all sorts of advice out there. We followed the following (lol) as best as we could.

Avocados first, then veggies, then fruits. Carrots are tougher, the last veggie we tried. Tropical fruits last of the fruits. High-acid last (haven't tried yet... i.e. oranges, limes, lemons, pineapple, tomatoes).

Read about avocado here... http://wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com/avocadobabyfoodrecipes.html
(Uuuuugggh, read my intro article. Don't you love bragging about MOMTASTIC.COM??? Good info, but the reason I've given you DudesBeingDads.com)

You can't find avocado in jars. It's too hard to preserve that long. The only way they'll get it, is if you make it. We also made some guacamole for ourselves in the process :)

Meat. We just tapped into meat. We haven't made our own yet. We bought the pre-made dinners that are a mix of turkey/chicken with some rice/potatoes. So far so good. Talk to your doctor about when to introduce meats. Our Doc said to wait as long as possible, but definitely not before 8 months. So of course, the day he's 8 months old, we give him chicken and rice haha.

This is simple stuff Dudes. Don't be scurrred. Email me if you have questions, or post a comment.

Alright Dude, go be a Dad.

Joe
